The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, March 2, 1905 It was a good natured, harmonious meeting of the citizens of this town, in the court room, on Tuesday night, imbued with one idea -- the good of the town. All classes were represented. The well dressed merchants, the mechanics, and the day laborer in his overalls, were there. It was truly a cosmopolitan crowd. The meeting was called to order by FRANK Q. STUART who was made chairman. Upon taking the chair he stated the object of the meeting in a few remarks. FRANK MANNING was selected secretary. A motion was made, and it prevailed, that the people from the different wards, should hold ward caucuses, and report their acts to the general caucus. The second ward named councilman COLLINS to succeed himself, and was so reported by ED. STORIE its chairman. In the third ward JOHN H. DARRAH, proprietor of the big Fair Store, was named unanimously. The third ward people struck trouble. Serious trouble too. They had the names of three good men to consider, J.F. SPIKER, W.W. KRIDELBAUGH and W.P. BEEM. They couldn't do a thing but consider, for darkness reigned over the land. The electric lights went out. They prayed for light -- more light, and when they got more it selected W.W. KRIDELBAUGH as their candidate for the council chamber. These nominations were promptly ratified. Then came the big event of the evening -- the nomination of a candidate for Mayor. WALTER DEWEY thought G.W. ALEXANDER was a good man for the mayoralty, and so named him, B.R. VAN DYKE was named, as was E.A. ANDERSON by MR. LINDQUIST in a short, earnest, sensible talk. Then the battle of the ballots began, with the result that ALEXANDER got 119, ANDERSON 51, and VAN DYKE 18, of the 198 votes cast. The balance of the work was easy. JOS. BRADEN and BERT BEEM were named for city treasurer. MR. BEEM's name was withdrawn, and MR. JOS. BRADEN was nominated by acclimation. In like manner T.M. STUART was named for city solicitor, and S.B. SWIFT for assessor. Then ------- they adjourned. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert June 15, 2004 http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm Notify Administrator about this message?
