I am downsizing and have come across a 1988 article about this house, which includes a picture taken in 1979. I like that picture better than the one taken in 1988, but I guess the people doing the restoration decided that wasn't the way it should look.
The house was built between 1695 and 1710 by Col. Henry Darnall, a merchant and relative of Lord Baltimore. It stayed in the Carroll family until 1740 when it was sold to Scottish merchant James Wardrop.
In 1907 Harry Buck, Sr., an Upper Marlboro merchant bought the 19 room mansion and lived there for 60 years, giving it the name Buck House. The Buck family sold the property to Prince George's County. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
I will send a copy of the article to anyone who would like to have it, if you can e-mail me your address.
