Looking for the parents of ELNATHAN DARLING who was, according to the census, born in CT (no location) ca
1781. He lived in Salisbury, Addison Co. and Rutland, Rutland County,VT.
He married Susan "Susanna" Wheelock (1784-1818 Rutland,VT).
They had 4 known children: Lucretia Darling, Sophia Ann Darling, Elnathan Darling, Jr., and Susan Darling.
Elnathan's wife, Susanna, died in 1818 when the children
were still young. Elnathan remarried 1822, a widow whose last name was Brigham. He moved ca 1830 by way of New York to Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio.
His daughter Lucretia Darling (My direct ancestor) married
Roswell Rowley (of Rutland) March 15, 1825 in Salisbury, Addison, VT.
Ca 1835 Lucretia (Darling) Rowley, husband Roswell Rowley,
and their children moved to Chautauqua County, Fredonia, NY.
Elnathan was a member of the Masonic Center Lodge in
Rutland (info from newspaper 1818). He was referred to
as Captain Elnathan Darling VT in the DAR GRC database report from the DAR website. He had a livery service, I believe. His father-in-law was Eleazer Wheelock, owner of
the Wheelock Hotel/Tavern for a time (later known as the Brock House) in Rutland, VT, was a post-rider and mail contractor.
In 1804 in Rutland, VT land records, there is a sale of land to Elnathan Darling from Abel Darling. I feel there is some relation there, but I don't know.
I would appreciate an answer from anyone who may know this family and Elanthan's parents. Please e-mail me if so at bem17@hotmail.com
