I forgot to add Hannah's lineage line and give more details of her connections and also there is a CORRECTION...
Hannah's lineage line is as follows:
Hannah (who m. Wm. BELK) > John & Hannah Morse > John & Mary Page > John & Naomi Flanders (they were NOT married) > George & Katherine _____ DARLING (he was the Scot POW).
I know there is a lot of debate over Hannah's parents and IF John and Hannah Morse DARLING really were her parents.
While I can't tell you for certain that this is her lineage line, it certainly seems to have a nice fit. Because I now have Ydna relatives that were from Darlington, SC...I have often wondered where the name of "DARLING-ton" came from since I was well familiar with the Darling family of New England.
Was Darlington, SC named for someone of the Darling last name??
At any rate, I can give you the Court documentation I have from my own notes regarding John DARLING, Hannah's supposed Grandfather in case any of this helps you all in resolving this mystery.
John DARLING and Naomi FLANDERS were never married however Naomi was hauled into Court to give testimony and to reveal the father of her child...she named John Darling as the father.
John Darling was also arrested for "fornication with Sarah PAUL" in 1684. Not too long after this he removed to Fairfield, Fairfield Co., CT. He left his infant daughter Elizabeth DARLING with his parents (George and Katherine) and left his illegitimate son John Darling with the child's mother Naomi FLANDERS.
This son John DARLING was born Feb. 21, 1683 in Salisbury, Essex Co., MA and again, John, Sr. never married Naomi. Naomi was born Dec. 15, 1656.
John Darling, Sr. was married however, his 1st legal marriage was to Elizabeth MUZZEY/Muzzy and they married Feb. 4, 1680 in Marblehead, Essex Co., MA.
They had one known child named Elizabeth Darling who was born in 1681.
John then had the relationship with Naomi which produced son John Darling in 1683.
Then his next legal marriage was to Elizabeth BEERS whom he married in 1688 Fairfield, CT. This marriage ended in Divorce but they had several children together.
Hannah DARLING b. 1689 in Norwalk, CT
Martha Darling b. 1692
John Darling b. March 24, 1694
James Darling b. 1698
Joseph Darling b. 1700 in Fairfield, CT
and Benjamin Darling b. 1701 also prob. in CT.
These are from the Town of Fairfield, CT probate records Vol. 6 and the Essex Co., MA Deeds vol 67 states that John Darling of Fairfield, CT is a son mentioned in his Father's will. John of Fairfield's father was the Scot POW George Darling.
There are numerous entries in the old 1600's Court records of Essex Co., MA for George Darling and his various business transactions as well as other disputes etc.
John Darling, Sr. died Feb. 11, 1719 in Fairfield, CT. He was born between 1658 and c1661 in Lynn, Essex Co., MA, son of George Darling and Katherine ______. Many have placed Katherine's last name as GRIDLEY, this is INCORRECT!!!!
There has (to my knowledge anyway), Never been any conclusive documentation to show or prove her last name.
John DARLING's son of the same name that was born out of wedlock to Naomi FLANDERS was born 1683 in Salisbury, MA and he married Mary PAGE on Nov. 6, 1708 in Salisbury, MA.
Mary PAGE was born Sept. 29, 1686 in Salisbury.
She and John had several children and among them was also a son named John DARLING b. Sept. 27, 1716 in Salisbury, MA.
THIS John Darling b. 1716 is the one who married Hannah MORSE on Oct. 18, 1733 in Salisbury, MA. She was b. 1719 in Newbury, Essex Co., MA.
Their children were several, but among them was daughter Hannah DARLING b. July 1, 1740 in East Kingston, Rockingham Co., NH. Her christening/baptism date was given as July 6, 1740 in Kingston, NH.
The Kingston, NH records I believe are still in tact. I think the NEHGS has a lot of the old Kingston church records and John and Hannah's children's baptism's could probably be found among them as well as other records.
However this still does not resolve the question as to How THIS Hannah Darling happened to be married to a southern farmer named William A. BELK. If William were a sea going man I might also understand this better, but it appears he was not.So I don't know how this couple came to be married IF it is indeed the correct Hannah.
Hannah's father John died Nov. 7, 1795 in Hopkinton, Merrimack Co., NH and if he was a sea going man, I have no indication of this, thinking that perhaps that somehow brought Hannah and Wm. together if her father were sailing to SC and bringing back tobacco or cotton etc. from there to New England there might have been some encounter between the families in that way, but it seems doubtful.
I noticed another person on this board was asking if this Hannah might not have come from one of the other Darling families that came early to VA.To me, logically, that would seem more fitting Geographically, but then my own family who started out in New England (at least I think so...but I have no real proof of that either, they may have come North from the South as so many families did prior to the Rev. War and then afterwards), but some of my own family has ties to the South as well, so I know it wasn't out of the question for these families to travel from the North to the South...warmer weather, better farming conditions and longer harvest times meant more money for the families.
Anyway, this is what I have for Hannah Darling's lineage line.
My apologies for leaving out one generation of Hannah's family in my earlier posting. So it was Hannah's Grt. Grandfather John Darling who was in and out of the Courts and who had the children out of wedlock etc.
Hope this additional info may be helpful, but even I am starting to doubt that this Hannah may not be the correct one now so more research will be needed to hopefully one day Prove this link.
