The Dantzler family was listed in The History of Orangeburg County, South Carolina, by A.S. Salley, Jr. This reference work gives some of the earlier Dantzler families of the area. I have followed the Dantzler family because typically on earlier census records they lived next door to or near my ancestors, the Taylor family. Although, the Dantzler family owned slaves they lived among families that were Free Colored. In the 1820 Census record, Frederick Dantzler lived next door to my ancestor Joseph Taylor. The Taylor's never owned slaves, and were listed as Free White, according to the census records. On the other side of the Frederick Dantzler [also spelled Dansler or Danzler at times] family lived the Matt Scott family, who were Free Colored. I have learned through much study, of the history of the time period and from various texts, that depending on the social status and wealth of a family, Free Colored individuals were sometimes listed as White. It is a good idea to follow all of the Census records from 1790 to around 1880 in order to find the families that lived together and, actually, moved together. The Bunch family, Avinger family, Gibson Family, Scott family, Duglas [Douglas]family, and Hutto family are some of the family names listed in Orangeburg. In the earlier years, such as the late 1700's and early 1800's, some of these families were in Virginia and N.C. and listed as Free Colored. A good source of information on these families is the text Free African Americans of North Carolina, Virginia and South Carolina, Volumes I & II,by Paul Heinegg. These families lived near the Dantzler's, Taylors and Williams in Orangeburg. This is not to say that they were related but they did live near each other. Free Colored on the earlier census included all ethnicities that were not White. Portuguese, Mulatto, Spanish, Black, Indian were normally listed as Free Colored. John Henry Danzler, Sr. and Jr., both lived in Orangeburg and were enumerated on the 1790 Census, along with my ancestor John Taylor. In the 1840 Census for Orangeburg County, Wm H. Dantzler, Jacob Dantzler and Daniel Dantzler all lived near another of my ancestors L.V. Williams. Daniel Dantzler lived next door to Ann Tanna, whose family was all Free Colored. In the 1850 Census Frederick Danzler, 77 years old, lives two houses from J. Taylor. I hope this information helps some. Best Wishes, Glenda Notify Administrator about this message?
