If you want to find out anything about the War Between the States, there is an exhaustive set of reference books that documents every known report, order, and event that could be found. It also includes personal letters pertaining to events during the War, commonly called the "Civil War." The entire set of books is hard bound and takes about 20 linear feet on a library shelf. The full title of the set is "Military Operations of the Civil War: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Government Printing Office, Washington, DC, 1901, Reprinted 1985, by BRIG GEN Fred C. Ainsworth and Joseph W Kirkley. The first book you should look for is the index to the entire set, and the last of the 130 volumes, "General Index and Corrections" Vol 130. This is mostly index and only contains 6 corrections, consuming about three pages. These corrections were made when the set was reprinted. Other corrections were made to official records in the original publication. The next part of the set is the "Supplement to the Official Records, Part I, Reports" Vol 1 thru Vol 12, and "Part II, Record of Events" Vol 1 thru Vol 80. The last part of the set is the "War of the Rebellion, Official Records, Operations in [each area named] Series I" Vol 1 thru Vol 53, "Series II" Vol 1 thru Vol 8, "Series III" Vol 1 thru 5, and "Series IV" Vol 1 thru Vol 3. Most military bases should have this reference set in their library. William Daniel (Dan) Dantzler Jr
