I have been seeking information about my great grandmother, Rebecca FANNIN, born 1850, I believe in the area of Upper Gragston Creek, Butler District, Wayne County, now West Virginia. Her parents were Silas and Polly (Ferguson) FANNIN. Her siblings were Theadore, Easton, Jeremiah, John, Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Mary Belle, Celistia, and William. She married 1st Workman and divorced him in 1877. We were told that she “remarried and moved away.” Not having the name of her second husband has been a major research obstacle. In almost forty years of research, I’ve found no one who has a complete record on her family. So now, I am hopefully inquiring from descendants of neighbors who lived in the area where she grew up.

I have learned that Rebecca’s father, Silas FANNIN served with the 10th Kentucky Cavalry in the civil war. He performed marriages in Wayne County between 1870 and 1887.

C(laude) C. DANIELS 24, Wayne Co., m. Mary C. Lett 27, Wayne Co., (m.1st, James Lett*) (d/o J. W. & Eliza Merrick), 1 Jan 1874.

*1870 Census had James A Lett 25 b. 1845 and Mary C Lett 23 b. 1847.

In Wayne County 1860 Virginia Census, the next household past Silas was James Merrick, age 38; wife Eliza, 40; Mary C., age 12; William F., 10; James M., 8; Polina, 6; and Theadore, 3.

Silas Fannin’s daughter, Celistia Fannin married in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, 9 October 1884 A. J. Daniels. She had two daughters, Dora born in 1885 and Alleta born in 1888. Celistia died about 1891. A. J. married 2nd, 2 February 1892 ALICE JOHNSON. Of their children were: Sallie, 1893; John 1895; Frank 1896; and Mary L., 1899.

I would like to have any information on the folks who lived along Upper Gragston Creek, Butler District, Wayne County, West Virginia 1850 through 1890. If you descend from either of these DANIELS families, please check your memorabilia and if you have anything relative to the Silas Fannin family, please share. Thank you.
