A few days ago I found something interesting in Lee County, Iowa in the 1850 Federal census. All were enumerated by John M. Newcomb, obviously a free-thinker when it came to spelling. It should be noted that Lee County, Iowa is just across the Mississippi River from Hancock County, IL, site of Nauvoo, infamous in Mormon history as the place where the Prophet Joseph Smith was killed. The Mormons had largely abandoned Nauvoo by early 1846, many of them to Montrose,Lee County,Iowa from where the Mormon Trail began in 1847. So, the census: NARA Series M432, roll 186 Montrose: Page 391 52 54 Julie Dannells, 42, F, W, New York Lyman Dannells, 17, M, W, Missouri Louisa A. Daniels, 7, M, W, IL *Stirling Dannels, above, was Sterling Daniels, my 2nd great-Grandfather, and Jasper N. was his son. They came from Perry County, OH after 1840 and both were in the Oregon Territory by 1853. The obvious misspellings of the Daniels name caused me to post this here in the event someone else knew one of these people. Any information about any of them would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Please note my new email address above. Gar Notify Administrator about this message?
