A biography/family history of Mansfield A. Daniels, Scobey, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 881 & 882.
Mansfield was born, 2 Apr 1858, son of John and Lavina (Turney) Daniels. At age 10, he moved with his family to Iowa. He was educated in PA & IA and at age 14 became a clerk in a general merchandise store at Marshalltown, IA. After four years with the store, he worked with his father in the carpenter's trade. For the next ten years he was a traveling commercial cigar salesman. After the cigar business, he became mercantile and plumbing businesses in Albion, IA. Mansfield's health became impaired and he decided to move West. In Apr 1896, he and his wife arrived in Poplar, MT, where he became the chief carpenter for the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, and his wife became Government nurse for the Agency. Mansfield was appointed US land agent at Poplar, MT. In 1901, he started farming and ranching and set up a small store at the site of Scobey, MT. Mr. Daniels continued to buy land until he he accumulated 2,260 acres.
On 6 Apr 1880, Mansfield married Adele M. Timmons, sister of Jacob Timmons of Scobey, MT. Adele died 26 Jul 1907. She had no children.
On 20 Jan 1909, Mansfield married his second wife, Miss Mabel E. Brooks, born 3 Jun 1878, Royalton, VT, daughter of Seldon Smith Brooks and Mary (Corbin) Brooks. The Brooks family was of Colonial New England stock, formerly identified with Hancock, VT. Mansfield and Mabel had three children: Marjorie A., Maydean A., Seldon.
In 1919, Mansfield suffered a paralytic stroke from which he never recovered, and passed away 15 Apr 1919.
