On January 3, 1899, 64-year-old William Henderson Dancy (1834-1913) dictated the following family history to Bertha Ward, his almost 15-year-old granddaughter, at Republic City, Republic County, Kansas:

"Edward Dancy my grandfather was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina, on the Reddies River. The Dancys are of Irish descent. Edward Dancy was married to Millie Vannoy, who also was born on the Reddies River in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Edward Dancy was married twice, his wives being sisters, and in those two marriages were seventeen children, ten boys and seven girls. The names of the boys are as follows: William, John, Abraham, Jesse J., Noah, Isom or Ishom, Obediah, Nathaniel, David and Thomas. I only remember one girl named Annie.

"Jesse J. Dancy of these boys is my father, and he married Rebecca Davis, a daughter of Ephraim Davis of Wilkes County, North Carolina on the Yadkin River. This Rebecca Davis had two brothers, Thomas and Ephraim, and five sisters. The youngest sister was named Julia and she married a man named Watson, another sister also married a brother to this Watson. One sister married Norman Brawhill. Thomas Davis married a girl by the name of Moor (or Moore), and they had one child named Franklin. The mother died and he married again and had four children.

"Ephraim Davis was an Englishman, born on the ocean as his parents were coming to America from England. He was in the Revolutionary War under the command of General Morgan and was with him at the battle of Cowpens. His wife, my grandmother, was a daughter of old man Holman of Holman's Ford spoken of in the history of Daniel Boone.

"My father Jesse J. Dancy, who married Rebecca Davis, and they had ten children, five girls and five boys. The oldest Irena born about the beginning of 1832 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, myself [William H. Dancy] was born July 20th, 1834, in Wilkes County, North Carolina. John C. was born in February 1837 in Tazewell County, Jeffersonville, Virginia. Elizabeth Jane and Lucindy Ann were born also at the same place in Virginia. George and Ephraim, twin brothers, died when they were babies.

"Then my father moved to Manchester, Clay County, Kentucky, and near there Nickatira was born. James W. and Kate were born at the same place. [Suppose Clay County, Kentucky.] My father then moved to Missouri where he died and is buried in Barry County in Corsicani cemetery. Elizabeth Dancy married Timothy Turner and died in 1863 leaving three children, Irena, George and John. She is buried at the Big Creek cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois.

"Kate died at the age of twenty and is buried at the Corsicani cemetery, Missouri. James W. Dancy died at the age of twenty five and is buried by the side of Kate. Nickatira married Jacob Russell and she died in 1876 leaving three children, Sarah, Frank and Gus. She is buried in Barry County, Missouri, also. John C. Dancy married Martha DeFord in Fulton County, Illinois and he died in 1888 leaving seven children. His wife died less than a month later in Smithfield, Fulton County, Illinois.

"Irena married George Snyder and is now a widow living in Joplin, Missouri. She has four children, all girls, Elen, Ida, Rebecca, and Alice.

"Ann (Lucinda) married John Wyman and now lives in Boardstown, Illinois.

"William Henderson Dancy married Frances Sybyl Servis on February 20th, 1855 on a farm called "Hellards Bottom" about three miles from Bournesville, Ohio, by Dr. Samuel Sittler of Bournesville. The license was obtained at Chilicothe, Ohio. Ten children were born as follows: Charlie, John, Abigail, Jesse, Frances, Rose, Hattie, Bula, Benjamin, and James S.

"Charlie died at the age of eight years and is buried at the Lewistown Cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois. Jesse died when nine months old, he is buried by the side of Charlie. My wife died March 8th, 1897 and is buried in the Prairie Rose Cemetery, Republic County, Kansas. John married Sophia Shellenberger and lives in Roseland British Columbia. They have two children, Grace and Willie.

"Abigail married Robert K. Dick and lives near Republic, Kansas. They have five children: Verda, Edna, Gertrude, Walter and Everst. Gertrude and Walter are now living. Frances married John R. Ward and [he] died in 1890 and is buried at Gordon, Nebraska. He left six children: Orie, Bertha, Jesse, Bula, Grace and Rose. Frances was again married to Perez Smith and they have one child, Leonard, and live near Republic, Kansas.

"Rose married Homer Eiler and now live in Pontiac, Illinois. They have one child named Julia Frances. Hattie married James Shellenberger and lives near Republic, Kansas. They have three children: Harry, Ray and Charlie.

"Ben married Oma Lacey and lives near Republic, Kansas. They have two children: Howard and Hester. James is single.

"Charles Servis was born in New Jersey about twenty miles from the old battlefield of Trenton. He married Abigail Bassett of Warren County, Ohio. She died in Ohio and is buried in Cat Tail cemetery, Ross County, Ohio. She left seven children, one boy and six girls. Mary Ann, Frances, Rachael, Jake, Katherine, Julia and Jane. Mary Ann died at the age of eight in Ross County.

"Frances married W. H. Dancy and died March 8th, 1897, leaving eight children. Rachael married Alexander Shultz (or Schultz) and died a few years after marriage. Jacob Servis married a girl named Phillips and died near Lewiston, Illinois, and he is buried in Lewiston cemetery. Julia married George M. Dye and lives near Republic, Kansas. She is the only one of the Servis family living. Jane died at the age of twenty-five."

(Special thanks to Kenneth Morrison who generously provided me with a copy of the handwritten document.)

William Dancy noted his daughter Rose married Homer Eiler. In the 1920s Homer Eiler used William's 1899 family history when he began his own genealogy research. In 1928 Homer Eiler published "Our Ancestors: A Brief Record of These Families: Dancy Servis Bassett Davis Holman Vannoy" which was printed and published by James S. Dancy in Grenola, Kansas.
