Dear Mr. Dancer
John Benjamin Dancer was my great-great grandfather and I know quite a lot about his family as my late aunt had correspondence with several microfilm experts from here and the US.

One of these people employed a genealogist to delve into the family history and got back to a Michael Dancer in the late 18th Century. It is thought the family originally came from Poland, and on entering this country their name was written down as an approximation. They were originally Jewish.

JBD himself had an optician's shop in Manchester and died in 1887.He was an exceptionally clever man who dictated his autobiography to my grandmother when she was a girl.

I can tell you more if you wish.
Yours sincerely
Claire Wilkie
