I found that at the time of the Norman Conquest, Danby in North Yorkshire was part of the Saxon estate of Crumberclive.Sometime later Danby Castle was built.
Danby Estate was sold to the Dawney family in 1656.
Danby is near Whitby, in North Yorkshire.
Since it is a Viking name, I suppose the place goes back to Viking times, but I don't suppose people started using it as a surname until after the Norman Conquest.
