Mystery of Alcie "Damron" Compton of Pike Co KY Partially Solved
Many have stated that Ailsey / Alcie Damron - Compton was an illegitimate child of James Damron.
Two scenarios come into play:
1) She may have been his daughter,
-- OR --
2) She may instead have belonged to someone else and was just bound out by the court to James Damron.
The following county court order shows an "Alesey Holis" (Ailsey Hollis), age 4, was bound out to James Damron in May 1825. I believe this child may indeed have been one-in-the-same person as Ailsey / Alcie Damron who married Leander Compton.
According to this court order, she would have been born around 1821 or thereabouts. We have Oct 1822 for Ailsey / Alcie Compton's birth date from the 1900 census.
Pike Co KY Court Book A-1:
"May 1825: Ordered that Alesey Holis a girl child about the age of four years be bound to James Damron until she become sixteen years of age which is done and said Damron entered into bond according to law and the bond which said Damron entered in to the amount of one hundred dollars and the said Damron is to learn the said girl the art of spinster."
It is reasonable to believe that Ailsey HOLLIS took on the surname of her guardian (or father??) James DAMRON.
