Veronica, did your mom give you the info I sent from my research? There are some fun stories about Francis Maxmillian Dametz. I wonder if I can post them here. I'll try, but it might be too big for the forum. First, though, when I first started reading the church records for St. Michaels in Zeitz, I found Francis (not Franz, Franz is his older brother) and his siblings mentioned in Portrait and Biographical Album of Washington, Clay and Riley Counties of Kansas published in 1890. However, there was such a big gap between Franz, the youngest child, and his older siblings that I was sure there was a child not mentioned in the Kansas book. Sure enough, I found the missing child, but not where I expected. The child not mentioned in the Kansas record was named Moritz Gustave born 23 Sep 1822 and died 20 Nov 1822 both in Zeitz. The family was: Samuel Dametz, son of Christian, born in Greensburg or Grunsberg, Silesia, Prussia and died 12 Sep 1866 Germany Married 3 Nov 1815 in Zeitz to Johanne Caroline Meltzer born 24 Jul 1791 in Zeitz, daughter of August Meltzer. Johanne died 5 Dec 1849 in Zeitz. They had: Julianne Henriette 19 Nov 1818 and she married Christian Wilhelm Dietzsch born 9 Dec 1812 in Zeitz son of Johann Christoph Dietzsch and Christiane Elenore Reinhardt. They married 29 Nov 1840 in Zeitz. and had nine children that I know of. Francis' mother died when he was 15 and Julianne was the woman who wrote him the letters you mentioned. She talked of begging him to return for his inheritance. But of course, he didn't. The second child was Gustav Robert born 3 Sep 1820 in Zeitz. He married Wilhelmine Henriette Siegel in 1849 and they had nine children that I know of. Seh died in 1863 and he married Friederike Straube in 1864 and had five more children. Gustav's fourth child, Julius Franz Dametz immigrated to America and lived with Francis for a while. He married Lydia Ann Haskins and settled in Rooks, Kansas. I know of four children for them. The third child was Moritz Gustav mentioned above, the baby who died and is not mentioned in the Kansas book. The fourth child was Julius Moritz born 6 May 1824 in Zeitz. He married Henriette Wilhelmine Stahl born 1829. They married in 1856 and had five children that I know of. Paul Otto born 9 apr 1863 in Zeitz and died 1907 in Monmouth, New Jersey married Sophia gustine Schneider in 1890. She was born Aug 1871 in New Jersey. I have six children listed with them and marriagess for all except one who died as a child. somebody mentioned that Paul's brother, Franz Moritz was the other Dametz to migrate to America. The Kansas book speaks of three of Francis' nephews: the Francis that settled in Rooks, Kansas, Paul who at that timelived in Connecticut, and Francis M. who lived in New York at that time. At first, I thought the Francis M. the book spoke of was Franz Moritz born 1856 and brother to Paul Otto, which somebody on this board mentioned. If they got the information from one of my sites, then it could be in error. We know for sure who the Francis that settled in Rooks was. And we know for sure who the Paul that settled in New Jersey is the son of because his birth records and his census dates match. However, the Franz M. that was Paul's brother does not match up on the church record birth date and the US census birth date. HOWEVER - Franz Leopold Maximillian Dametz the son of Francis Julius DOES match both the church record, and the US census record, so I believe that THIS Franz was the one mentioned in the book, cousin and not brother to Paul. So, back to Samuel and Johanne's children: Franz Julius was born 13 Oct 1826 and in 1855 married Johanne Friedererike Hauschild who was born 19 Feb 1829. They had five chidren that I know of, the third being Franz Leopole Maximilian born 26 Aug 1860. I have this man married to Sophia D. born Sep 1863 in Zeitz and that they have 8 children that I know of. You asked about Francis M. Dametz' immigration story. according to the 1890 book, he received a substantial education in excellent school until he was 14 when he started learning the trade of a butcher. He followed this trade until 1854. In 1854, he left his home to come to America to improve his fortune. He sailed from Bremen on the 1st of April and arrived in New York on the 20th of May with only 37 pennies to being his new life. He soon became a driver on a canal in New Jersey. A week later he went to Pennsylvania and worked on a farm for $5/month. Two months later he went to wrok as a butcher in Easton for $9/month. The following spring he went westward to Illinois and for 8 years worked on a farm. Next he went to Iowa and bought a 40 acre farm, bought more land, and farmed there until 1873. He traded his possessions in Iowa for 160 acres of wild land in Washington, Kansas. At the time of the book, he had developed that into well improved land surrounded by a neatly trimmed hedge and buildings. He also had a second successful farm in Coleman. Francis and his wife, Lavina Horn were Quakers and he was president of the Friend's (Quaker) Accademy Association in Washington, Kansas). He spoke both German and English fluently. He was strongly religious but even so, he felt so strongly about America that he enlisted twice in the Union army to fight slavery. He did not leave the service until after the last battle was goufht, and was stationed most of the time in Arkansas. so, that is the Long SHORT of it! what a great family to be a part of! Cherie Logan - daughter of Carol Elizabeth DaMetz - daughter of Ralph Ashford DaMetz/Reba Marguerite YORK - son of Omer Ashford Dametz/Margaret Louisa Bell COFFIN - son of Francis Maxmillian DAMETZ/Lavina A. HORN - son of Samuel DAMETZ/Johanne Caroline MELTZER. Notify Administrator about this message?
