James DAMERY, ca 1830?, Drisheen, Cork

James DAMERY, born about 1830 or before, was a farmer in the townland of Drisheen, County Cork, Ireland, and was one of my two great-grandfathers in Ireland. His wife was Elizabeth WOLFE. Their daughter, Sarah DAMERY (1862- February 1, 1948), my maternal grandmother, was the second wife of my grandfather, William Jennings, of the townland of Keelinga South, Leap, County Cork.

In 1912, my mother followed several of her half-sisters and sisters to Boston, which is why I am an American.

During the 1940s there was a Dick DAMERY living in Maine. He frequently visited one of my aunts in Brookline, MA. My mother and her sisters referred to him as a cousin of their mother's. A few years ago (1997 or 1998) I called several DAMERY's in Maine, but I could make no connection. Everyone I called seemed to say their family came from Canada rather than from Ireland, so I gave up on the project.

Some of the DAMERY relatives may have gone to New Zealand. In my possession are copies of some letters written in the early 1930s to my grandmother Sarah in Ireland from a niece of hers from Ardgowan, Oamaru, New Zealand. The niece, Elizabeth (Lizzie) BRADFIELD (nee DAMERY) (December 21, 1870-January 29, 1934), was a daughter of Sarah's older brother, first name unknown. In her letters, Lizzie mentions that she (Lizzie) had a brother Tom and a sister Susie. I believe that Susie remained in Ireland, as I recall my mother and her sisters talk on occasion about Susie DAMERY "back home." Most likely, Tom also remained in Ireland.

In one letter Lizzie inquired about a Johnny DAMERY in Waterford [Ireland]. I have no idea of the relationship.

Lizzie had more than one child. Letty was the name of one of them. Others MAY have been Phyllis, Mavis, Winnie, and Jack.

I would like to hear from anyone who is interested in DAMERY research.
