Since posting to the DAME GenForum, I acquired a book about the DAME-RIDLEY family. This has clarified some of my information. The book (by Charlotte Traylor) states the following:
George John DAME was of English descent. His ancestors fled into Germany from England when religious persecution was rampant. George John DAME fought in the Revolutionary War of 1776 under the name of John DAME. Aprivate in Capt. Hill's Co., 7th Virginia Regiment, commanded by Col. Alexander McClenanhan. John's name is included on the muster roll of 20 May 1777, he was discharged on 2 Feb 1778.
Charlotte's writings give the following:
George John Dame, b circa 1755, Hanover, Germany, d before 1810 Botetourt Co., VA. He married Margaret ?? Their children were John(b. 1785, d. 1866), George Jacob and David B. John married Elizabeth OYLER and they had Valentine, John II, Mary, Melinda, Lucinda, Elizabeth Ann, Andrew Frederick, Sarah, George W., David, and Daniel.

I don't know if John II might be the John Hudson you seek. What do you think?

Polly
