DEZELL vs. DALZIEL

Question for DL researchers - Does the oldest spelling take precedence over the newer?
Marriage record - Parish Registers 1669-1855 - Church of Scotland - Parish Church of Kilwinning:
John DEZELL marries Mary LOGAN - 04 Feb.1826 - Kilwinning, Ayr.
Elizabeth DEZELL marries Hugh RITCHMOND - 01 Oct. 1825 - Kilwinning, Ayr.
But from the same Register:
16 Apr. 1858 at Byers, Kilwinning - Joseph SMITH, age 23, of Kilwinning, son of Henry Smith, deceased, and Jane JORDAN, deceased, to
Agnes DALZIEL, age 22, of Kilwinning, dau. of JOHN DALZIEL, deceased, and MARY LOGAN, deceased - Witness: John ANDERSON, Walter YOUNG.
Would I be safe in assuming that the original spelling of John's surname was DEZELL and that by 1858 it was changed to DALZIEL?
Your help would be much appreciated!
James Dezell
