You're in luck, Aaron. Many of these queries go unanswered.

The DALZELL family, or more specifically your branch of it, would seem to have emigrated from Motherwell, Scotland to Armagh, Ireland as part of the English "plantations"- which intended to populate the area with protestant Scottish stock. This would have been in the early 1600's -though your family name does not appear among the earlier recorded plantation families (see: http://www.yclc.ca/indexzf.html )

DALZELL families appear in the 1796 list of flaxgrowers of Armagh (see: http://www.failteromhat.com/flax/armagh.htm ) (which was, essentially a census of the farming population):
Dalzel Samuel Tynan
Dalzell Allen Tynan
Dalzell John Tynan
Dalzell Thomas Mullaghbrack

The descendants of one of these families travelled to Canada in 1823 at the same time as the family of one JAMES M'CREERY and his wife ELIZABETH MAGEE M'CREERY.Both families settled Ramsay Twp. , Lanark County, Ontario (see: www.yclc.ca/indexz ) The M'CREERYs of Armagh in 1796 were:

M'Creery James Loughgilly
M'Creery Mary Mullaghbrack
M'Creery Samuel Derrynoose

JAMES and ELIZABETH M'CREERY's family were :

John (1810-1888), William (1812-1892) Mary (b. 1818), James (1816-1881) Joseph Campbell McCreary (1819-1903) Elizabeth (1821-54) Margaret (1823-1915) Anne (b. 1826) and Alice. Since there is no SAMUEL (name appears one generation later)it is hard to link this family to SAMUEL M'CREERY of DERRYNOOSE - which, as will be seen below is very tempting otherwise, as DERRYNOOSE come up so often in the origins of several of these families.I will leave it be - for now!

The DALZELLs were JAMES DALZELL (wife unknown) and THOMAS DALZELL and his wife MARGARET (whose birth date has been listed as 1775). Both DALZELL families are listed in the 1837 Cess Roll for Ramsay Twp. - the earliest known census (see: http://globalgenealogy.com/LCGS/mostly/M-RCESS.HTM )allowing us to see the numbers of children. JAMES had one son and daughter > 16 yrs - and so they must have been born in Ireland.THOMAS had two sons and one daughter >16 in 1837.ELIZABETH DALZELL (now spelled DEZELL) had married WILLIAM MAGEE (1813-1853), son of JOHN MAGEE and his wife JANE WOOLSEY (b.c. 1780)who are thought to have come from Portadown, Armagh. The MAGEES in Armagh in 1796 were:

Magee Bernard Armagh
Magee Catherine Armagh
Magee Edward Armagh
Magee Henry Tynan
Magee James Armagh
Magee John Armagh
Magee John Keady
Magee John Tynan
Magee Thomas Armagh

... but JOHN's father was listed as GEORGE MAGEE. of interest, perhaps, are JOHN MAGEE of Tynan and JOHN MAGEE of Keady, as these were places where the MAGEE and DALZELL families may have been linked. This is important because many of JOHN MAGEE's family married DALZELLs. (see: http://www.yclc.ca/indexz.html )

In any case, and of greater relevance to you, THOMAS and MARGARET DALZELL had a son THOMAS in 1829, and he is your ancestor - and we even have a picture of him with his wife MARY ANN BENSON (also seen as ANN MARIE BENSON ) see: http://www.yclc.ca/indexzc.html - but by this time he was known as THOMAS DEZELL. Thomas and MARY ANN married in 1827 and are seen in the Census of Maryborough, Wellington North in 1871 as THOMAS DAZELL and wife ANN MARIA with son SAMUEL, age 23(b. 1828)son JOHN age 21 (b. 1831) daughter MARY age 19 (b. 1833)son JAMES age 17 b. 1835)son THOMAS age 15 (b. 1856) son WILLIAM age 13 (b. 1858)son ALEXANDER age 9 (b. 1862) and daughter SARAH, age 4 (b. 1867). This list supercedes all others (there are several ,compiled by relatives).

It would have been nice, of course, to have "nailed down" the area of Armagh which sent THOMAS DALZELL and his wife MARGARET to Canada.

There was another DALZELL family who came to Canada in 1831 and settled in Kitley Twp.- which is tolerably close to Ramsay Twp. - ROBERT DALZELL b. 1791 and his wife MARGARET b. 1788 (seen there as DEZELL) (see: , and it is strongly suggested by researchers of this family that they came from Derrynoose, which is 2.5 miles from Keady and next door to Tynan. They have further located a brother, THOMAS DALZELL b. 1776, and a sister, married to a man named MOONEY(only one MOONEY among the 1796 Flaxgrowers:

Mooney Charles Creggan

(see: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.dezell/66/mb.ashx )

Creggan is south of Newtownhamilton/Keady/Derrynoose/Tynan

As may be apparent from visiting

http://www.yclc.ca/indexze.html

you will see that I have been researching the families who ended up together in Ramsay Twp. and the most frequent reference among the emigrant families from Armagh is, indeed, the area called DERRYNOOSE.

Whether the DALZELLs who reached Kitley Twp. and those who reached Ramsay Twp. were related remains unknown - but there is one interesting reference - that one SARAH MAGEE, b. 1849, whose mother was ELIZABETH DALZELL, daughter of JAMES DALZELL married a R. DEZELL. There were no R. DEZELLs in RAMSAY, so I am trying to find out from other researchers whether ROBERT DEZELL of Kitley had a son or grandson who may have become SARAH's husband.

The search remains interesting!
Perhaps you will find a way to contribute to it.
