I recently uncovered part of the mystery. The parents of my grandfather's mother (Isabella Macaulay) turn out to be John Macaulay and Jane Dalzell. They may have immigrated with their children from Northern Ireland. Isabella married George McIlwaine in New York City in 1879. Her brother, John Macaulay, was an officer in the Spanish-American War and a grocer in New York. Any additonal family information will be greatly appreciated.
