"Yesterday" by Martha Harrington - Letter from John (James' brother) reminiscing about childhood.

Brother James was nine years old when the Battle of New Orleans was fought in 1812 and would often go on errands to grandmother's house and the old lady generally gave him sugar or some nick-nack which made her a great favorite with him.

When the news of the aforesaid battle reached our home, James felt he had something his grandmother would be pleased to hear and so, without saying anything to mother, ran with all his might to tell the glad tidings.

Grandmother, grandmother, Gen. Jackson has whipped the life out of the British at New Orleans. Well (came the unlocked for response) Jackson may whip them on land but he can't whip them on water. Brother James never acknowledged in so many words but he gave me to understand he did not get any sugar that time.

"Yesterday" by Martha Harrington - Letter from Mary's brother reminiscing about childhood.

Mary was of a lively disposition and greatly delighted in horseback riding but it ultimately proved her undoing. While going on a visit to see her neighbor, a covey of partridges flew up near the roadway and frightened her horse which threw her to the ground and rendered her a cripple for life. She was loyal to her "Pretender" to her dying day and even in her more cheery moods, would sometimes sing "Oh Charley".
