There seems to be a fair bit of controversy about the name Dalrymple, yet one must apreciate that the Town of Dalrymple is historicaly quite young as is Scotland. My own interpretation is that the Dalrymple are the original Germanic tribes rom the North of Ireland, (Saxon does not fit well as these Germanic races would have been somewhat culturaly different to that of the Saxon that invaded England). Also the aspect of Antrim seems to fit any notion to the water in the respect of a reasonable explanation as to the derivitive of the Dalrymple, away from French and celtic. The Dalrymple as a Germanic tribe, part of the Dal-RiaDa entered what was then pictish Northern Britain and subdued the celtic picts into unification as Scotland. This was deemed a necessary tactic to thwart the viking invasions. The Dal-RiaDa invaded northern Britain when the Romans weekened their defence of the area in the fourth century. The Dalrymple are of the most fearsom of all warriors before the advent of soldiering as a modern concept. The vikings, the celts and the Angles were no match for the Germanic-Scots who throughout history have distinguished themselves from all other Scots, in particular through a very different physical appearence although one must stress that many modern Dalrymple's show pictish and viking traits. As a Dalrymple my own perception of the name Dalrymple is to link it with the Dal-riaDa thus I like to reference the name Dalrymple in a broader context: that is, I believe Dalrymple is relevant to the water yet consider it to be relative to the winding river between Ireland and Scotland as the people of those times may well have viewed this strech of water as an inland waterway. I hope this information helps with solidifying some aspects to the identity of the Dalrymple and I would also appreciate further coment as I'm no historian, yet as a former soldier, if there is such a thing, I have a warrior archetype shown in my physical appearence that outshines the holywood representation by far. I am also amazed that the Dalrymple's seem to have similar traits, such as, poor handwriting, poor spelling, a sense of extreme fairness, the urge to explore, a love of the water, lack the drinking abilities of most other Scots and are great self taught scholars.
