The first Viscount Stair's eldest grandson, James was accidentally shot by his brother John (later 2nd Earl of Stair) at Carscreugh in Galloway. They were playing with pistols which had been left in the Hall, and which they presuambly thought were unloaded. John was sent to stay with relatives whilst his parents recovered from the shock - however, it is extremely unlikely that he went to America as the family were reunited shortly afterwards. (The only recorded exit out of the British Isles at this period is the self imposed exile of the first Viscount in order to avoid the Test Act. He went to Holland and returned with William of Orange in Novemeber 1688) A pardon for this 'Crime' was granted when Sir John Dalrymple (later the First Earl of Stair) became Lord Advocate in 1686.
