In Reply to: Black Irish - truth or myth?? by Daniel G. L. Daley of 945

Dear Dan,
You have the date and some of the facts - but the answer is in history itself. The original(?) inhabitants descibed in Roman accounts were large shouldered, very fair complected, and red hair was prominent.
Keep in mind that by the time the Romans arrived (around 2000 years ago), Ireland had been over run and invaded numerous times by Scandinavian "Vikings"(tall, broad shouldered, fair complectioned)
Then ask yourself, "HOW could the seafaring Arabs/Moslem people resist either Spain or the British Isles?" THEY COULDN'T!!!!
Consequently the Black Irish EXIST both historically and now. My father had green eyes and black hair - his twin had red hair and blue eyes! The term Black Irish had alot more meaning to it for our far removed ancestors..........it of course brought fear to a mother's heart for the invaders were back! But the "Black Irish" were Spanish/Moslem men who first came to conquer and then were conquered themselves. Why did they stay? Why else...beautiful, spirited Irish women! But the history of Ireland is a history of invasion which continues to this day. Enjoy your journey - pax vobiscum.
