Donna,
I can't answer your question, but may have a possible clue for you.The reference to SHIRLEYs and SMITHs in these families suggests to me a possible relationship to the DALE family of Barren Co. KY.Many of these folks settled in Boone Co., IN.The SHIRLEYs and DALEs intermarried frequently; and many of the SMITHs in Boone Co. are descendants of Benjamin SMITH and his wife Susannah, who is said to have been a SHIRLEY.They lived in Barren Co KY before moving to Boone Co., IN.
I'm from another Barren Co. KY DALE/SHIRLEY branch that went to IL and MO, not IN, but I did some work in Boone and Hendricks Co. IN several years ago when I was in a particularly addictive mode and chasing distant cousins. The widow of this James DALE that you mention, Ann, is listed in the 1850 census as age 55, b. VA, with William, age 19, b. KY, George W. age 10, b. IN, and Mary BEERAFT (? surname spelling), age 15, b. IN.
I will have to check my DALE info more closely; I can't remember whether I was ever able to identify any of the Boone Co. DALEs as part of the Barren Co., KY family or not. Some of them seem to have been from TN, not KY.
(It may take a while, as I don't have most of my DALE info computerized, my paper files are a mess, I haven't worked on this family for several years, and I've got several other projects going. If you don't hear from me within a few weeks, bug me via e-mail.)
