Chuck,
I've wondered about these other children of William Dale and Frances Phillips. I haven't found a Joseph Dale, but here is a potential lead.
Joseph was the first name of one of Rev. Thomas Dodson and Elizabeth's sons. According to what I've read (unverified) Joseph was born 21 Feb 1727 and died 1773 in Halifax. That puts him in the right place. I show that Frances Phillips Dale was born in 1718, so Joseph was too old to pass for one of her sons.
What I have says the Dodson's are connected to Frances through her mother, Hannah Goad, who married 1st Tobias Phillips and 2nd William Dodson (son of Charles Dodson II). We've discussed how the Dodsons, Goads and Dales are interconnected.
Another element - A second branch of the Dodson family descended from the brother of Charles Dodson II, Thomas, left Richmond County and settled in Prince William/Fauquier before moving to Halifax. This family was involved in the early Baptist movement. Rev. Thomas Dodson II and his family left Broad Run church (Thomas Dodson Sr. was one of the founding members in Dec 1762), along with Rev. John Creel and his family, to start a new church in Halifax about 1766. I'm thinking the Dales and Gilbert and Elizabeth Mason weren't too far behind.
[This all needs to be verified]. Rev. William Creel married Alice Dodson, (whom I show is the sister of Rev. Thomas Dodson). They had a son, (Rev) John Creel. He married Rhoda Dodson, the daughter of Rev. Thomas Dodson (1st cousins).
That is all well and good, but it doesn't explain how Joseph was recorded as a Dale - if it was in fact Joseph Dodson on the deed. Frances may have been literate, but surely the son of a preacher would be expected to be literate and know the Bible. Perhaps he was helping out with the transaction and looking out for Frances' interests? Could he have been recorded as a Dale as a mistake?
