Chronology of Elizabeth Dale (m1. Gilbert Mason, m2. James Keenum)
Daughter of William Dale Sr. and Frances Phillips
SURNAMES:Alday, Alexander, Ayers, Board, Clayton, Compton, Cundiff, Dale, Daniel, Demass, Desmond, Flourney, Frith, Hancock, High, Keenan, Keenum, Kennon, Kenom, Kenum, Leftwich, Mason, Murphy, Nichols, Orr, Phillips, Prather/Prathor,Ready/Reedy, Richardson, Steptoe, Tate, Terry, Toney.
SUMMARY:Elizabeth Dale was born in Richmond Co., VA, 31 Mar 1745.Her parents were William Dale (Sr.) and Frances Phillips. She married Gilbert Mason sometime before 1765 but the site of that marriage is unknown (probably not Bedford Co., VA).She and her new family may have moved to Bedford Co., VA, when her mother and siblings relocated there in about 1766, several years after the death of her father. The will of her mother Frances (Phillips) Dale in 1777 mentions daughter Elizabeth Mason, who received “one pound five shillings for her part”.Her 1st husband Gilbert Mason died about August 1781 in Bedford County. In March 1785 she married her 2nd husband, James Keenum/Keenan.Some of her Mason children were married in Bedford Co. during the period 1790-1796.Due to spelling uncertainties and similar surnames, it becomes difficult to track James and Elizabeth (Dale)(Mason) Keenum after that period.Posted family trees on Ancestry.com and elsewhere indicate James and Elizabeth Keenum had two sons who ended up in Ohio.

31 Mar 1745
ELIZABETH DALE was born in North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., VA, to WILLIAM (Sr.) and FRANCES (Phillips) DALE. [1, 2].
abt Jan 1758
Father WILLIAM DALE (Sr.) died in Richmond Co., VA [2].
abt 1765
Estimated birth year for WILLIAM MASON, the eldest child of GILBERT MASON and ELIZABETH (Dale) MASON [2].Given this birth year, the fact that the Dale family apparently moved to Bedford Co. in about 1766, and the lack of a record of the Mason-Dale marriage in the latter county, it is possible that Gilbert Mason and Elizabeth Dale were married in Richmond Co., VA, prior to the move.
abt 1766
Brother RICHARD DALE, in his Revolutionary War pension application, indicated that he came from Richmond Co., VA, to Bedford Co., VA, when he was about 9 yrs old or about in 1766 [3].Presumably, widow FRANCES (Phillips) DALE brought all her children in that move after the death of her husband (William Sr.).
26 June 1772
Bedford Co., VA.Estate of JONATHAN PRATHOR/PRATHER, dec’d [4, 5].Inventory and appraisal pursuant to an order of 26 June 1772; appraisers included GILBERT MASON, Jonathan Cundiff, and Thomas Demass. The inventory was returned 22 Mar 1773.Testator: Robert Alexander. This Gilbert Mason is probably Elizabeth Dale’s husband.
10 May 1777
Will of FRANCES DALE in Bedford Co., VA [6, 7].She names sons RICHARD and WILLIAM DALE, daughter ELIZABETH MASON.Witnesses: Nathaniel Tate, William Terry, John Daniel.
abt July 1777
FRANCES (Phillips) DALE died in Bedford Co., VA; will proved in court 28 July 1777 [6, 7].Testator: James Steptoe.Frances’ son RICHARD DALE got all the livestock and household furniture; son WILLIAM DALE and daughter ELIZABETH MASON each got “one pound five shillings for his/her part”.
3 Apr 1778
Bedford Co., VA.Appraisal of the estate of ALEXANDER KENUMS, dec’d, by James Ayers, Benjamin Cundiff, and George Cundiff [8].Testator, James Steptoe.Received in court 28 June 1779.Also, there is a published abstract of an accounting of this estate [9], listing ALEXANDER KEENUM, dec’d; SARAH KEENUM, administratrix. Also mentioned:James Ayres, John Ayres, John Murphy, Matthew Flourney, and Perrin Alday; examined by Thomas Leftwich, Samuel Hancock, and John Clayton; returned 23 Sept 1793.The relationship of this Kenums/Keenum to James Keenum--see below--is unverified; Alexander and Sarah Keenum are listed as the parents of James Keenum in various family trees on Ancestry.com, etc.
28 Aug 1781
Bedford Co., VA.Inventory and appraisal of the estate of GILBERT MASON, dec’d [4, 10].Inventory included household furnishings, livestock, and farm equipment.Witnesses: William High, Bosdel Nichols, John Orr.Received, 28 Aug 1781.Testator: James Steptoe.
12 Mar 1785
Widow ELIZABETH MASON married JAMES KEENUM in Bedford Co., VA [11].Surety was provided by Elizabeth (Dale) Mason’s brother RICHARD DALE.Surname spelling variations noted so far include Keenum and Keenan, perhaps also Kenom, Kenums, and Kennon.See below. There are numerous land entries for the surname “Kennon” listed by Marian D. Chiarito [12, 13] from record books in s.w. VA (counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick) during the period 1737-1796 which I have not yet examined.
1787
Bedford Co., VA, Dist. of Henry Buford.JAMES KENOM is on the 1787 tax list “B”, no slaves, 3 horses, 8 cattle [14].
22 Feb 1790
REUBEN MASON married Caty RICHARDSON in Bedford Co., VA [11].Surety was provided by John Board; consent was by Margaret Richardson, mother of Caty. This Reuben Mason is presumed to be the son of Gilbert and Elizabeth (Dale) Mason.
(28 July 1794
CHARLES TONEY married NANCEY READY in Bedford Co., VA [11].Surety was by Charles Ready, brother of Nancey.Consent for Nancey was from Richard & Mary Dale. This and the next entry imply that Richard Dale’s wife Mary had a previous marriage with unknown Ready.)
4 Aug 1794
CHARLES READY married SALLY MASON in Bedford Co., VA [11].Consent for Charles Ready was by mother MARY DALE; consent for Sally Mason was by mother ELIZABETH (Dale)(Mason) KEENUM.Surety provided by WILLIAM FRITH, probably the future brother-in-law of Sally; see next.Since Charles Ready is a stepson of Richard Dale, he does not appear to be a blood relative of Richard’s niece Sally Mason.Note that the two Ready siblings married just one week apart.
27 Aug 1796
WILLIAM FRITH married RHODA MASON in Bedford Co., VA [11].Consent for Rhoda Mason was given by mother ELIZABETH KEENAN.Surety by Joel Compton.
Information of uncertain relevance:
1786-1787
James Kennon is on the 1786 tax list for Franklin Co., VA [15] and served on a jury in county court there in August 1787 [16].The relationship or equivalence of the Kennon and Keenum surnames is uncertain.
