A small mystery I was considering is the identity of a "Caleb Dale" listed in Marjorie Fischer's compilation of early Washington Co., TN (= NC at the time) county records ("Tennesseans before 1800, Washington County", 1996). Caleb Dale's name appears on a jury in the Washington Co. Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions on Wed. 11 Nov 1789. I have found no other reference to a Caleb Dale anywhere in that era (late 1700s to early 1800s). I may have uncovered a little clarification:
On Washington Co. tax lists (mf 639) for 1779 there is a Caleb DADEL Jr. (who was taxed for 57 ac, 2 horses, and 3 head of cattle), as well as an Isaac DADLE (50 ac, 5 horses, and 4 cattle).
So a new possibility is that Caleb's name was misspelled on the later jury list. At the moment, I don't have resources at hand to research the Dadle/Dadel surname. It remains just a possible explanation.
