I was searching some censuses for DAFFIN and found in the 1860 Census for Indiana a DAFFIN family. However, in the 1870 census it appears the father and son's surname became DAFFRON and DAFORER. See if these fit your William's description...

The search for more information on my own Daffin family of Maryland has led me
to Indiana. I recently received the following from the 1860 Census of Indiana.
Is there anybody from this list that has these names in their data or could
help me find out more on who these Daffins were, when they arrived in America,
and where they may have went to? My own gggrandfather, THOMAS J. DAFFIN, was
born about 1817 and lived in Md. I do not know where he was born or who his
parents were.

The 1870 Allen County Census index which I have shows William Dafforer,
Jr. on page 624 in Pleasant Township and William Daffron also on page
624. Might be your guy with a different spelling.
