Hi Philip,
What does OZ mean?Australia?Anyway your luck is in as I am sure that I can help you with your Daffern ancestry as I am currently carrying out a one-name study on this name and variants.I live in Broadway, Worcs. England and my maiden name was Daffurn.
I can't find your father's birth registration in 1945 but I have found William F Daffern's in 1946, Patricia's in 1954 and Jacqueline's in 1961 all registered in Manchester.Mother's maiden name given as Chappell. Your grandfather was William F. Daffern, born in 1922 and married in 1944 to ? Chappell at Manchester.Possible siblings of William are:-Edward (1910) registration Chorley, John (1912) Prestwich, Charles (1914) Chorlton, Ethel M (1916 - 1917) Manchester, Jessie V. (1919) Manchester, and Edgar (1920 - 1920). also Manchester.Mother's maiden name given as Hilton (all births proved from 1913 when mother's maiden name was introduced)William F. was the son of Thomas George (1887 Ashton - 1963 Manchester) and Edith ? (died 1965 Manchester)They married in 1909 Chorley.Thomas's parents were Albert E. Daffern (1863- no marriage or death found) and Sarah Ann Wright(died 1959 aged 95 Manchester)Siblings of Thomas George were:Alice (4th July,1884 Ashton - 1968 Aukland N.Z. married Samuel Lord), Louise (died 1927 Isle of Man, spinster) and Gladys Emma (24th August, 1894 Manchester, married ? Robinson 29th January, 1912 Chorlton).
Albert E. Daffern's ancestry has been proved back to a Richard Daffern and Sarah Spencer who married on the 17th April, 1727 at Arley, Warks. by Peter Lee of Nuneaton, Warks.
Before you can claim all this, you will have to prove that the marriage in the September quarter of 1909 Chorley was between Thomas George Daffern and Edith Hilton or Edith Healey, as some family trees have given. It is the surname Hilton that we need. This is done by cross-checking the Marriage Civil Registrations Index.Once this has been done then you are there! If you have not found out by the Spring, I will be next going to the Worcester Record Office then and I will check this out.You will have to remind me in April or May.
Please can you give me any Daffern information from William F. (1946) and your father to the present day (only to the marriage of females)for my files. If you wish to write to me via my email address then it is:- [email protected]
Good luck
Diana
