Can anyone identify PARSON DADE (spelling may be incorrect) It is noted Jemima West (an orphan) and d/o Hugh West dec about 1768 - planned to elope/marry with Parson Dade. George West (her uncle and guardian) against marriage, went after her. We know that William Deneale (making deposition) married Sybil West, sister to Jemimah and also one of 3 orphans of Henry West above.. Sarah, Sybil and Jemimah. We know George West died about 1786, so this had to happen bet 1768-1786 circa. Jemima West married Edward Adams. Additions comments welcome. *********************** Northern Virginia Genealogy 6 (2001) page 633 Deposition of William Deneale from Gunnell v. Whiting' This paper is part of a file of papers about the Gunnells, found in a family file at the Fairfax Archives. Miscelleaneous papers have been compiled under the pre- dominant surname, and are organized into "Genealogy Boxes. " Because this typescript of the deposition (without an author) is labeled, Fredricksburg #115, it might'have come from a suit that was appealed to the District Court in Fredericksburg. However, the style of the suit was not indicated. It probably was Deneale v. Little, although the title on the typescript is Gunnell v. Whiting. Fairfax County, to wit. The Deposition of William Deneale of full age taken on behalf of Henry Gunnell and Sarah his Wife and Edward Adams (Adams) and Jernima his Wife parties Complainants in a suit in Chancery brought by William Deneale and Sybil his wife, Henry Gunnell and Sarah his wife and Edward Adams and Jernima his wife Complainants against Charles Little Surviving Executor of George West deceased who was the principal acting Executor of Hugh West (the younger) dec'd. and now depending in the County Court of Fairfax Taken at the House of Penelope Darnes agreeable to Notice herewith filed. Who being first duly sworn deposeth and saith as follows, to wit. That some time in the year after Sarah Peyton now Sarah Gunnell (above mentioned) was married to her first husband Vaul Peyton, Colo. George West above mentioned came to this Deponents house very early one morning and then informed this Deponent that he had left home the night before after supper and said that the reason of his taking such a ride was an account of a report which he had just heard previous to his leaving- home that his Niece Jernima West now Jernima Adams was about to get mar- married married (sic) to PARSON DADE and that he did expect to find her and the said Dade at this Deponents house on which this Deponent informed the said West that his said Niece was not there but that she was at William Tripletts with her Grand mother and mother to the said G. West the said West then requested this deponent to go to the said Tripletts and carry a letter from him to his said Niece on the sub- ject stating his objection to such a marriage with said Dade and as this deponent had also heard of such a report, he did carry a letter from said West to the said Jernima at which time the said West requested me to get a written answer to his Page 634 letter on the subject. That when this Deponent delivered the said letter to her she appeared very angry and much hurt on the subject of said West letter, and it was with some difficulty that this deponent could prevail on her to write an answer, which she did (line deleted in copy at bottom of page, by being too large for copying machine) Top line of next page hard to read .... anger ... unpropriety of such language and prevailed on her to alter it but not fully to this deponent's satisfaction a part of which was that she would never again return to reside with her uncle the said West and that if she could do no better she would choose Guardian and live on the profits of her Estate that if her Estate that if her said uncle choose he could make her pay for Board and if she had that to do she would live where it suited her own inclination. This Deponent then returned home the same day and delivered the said Jemima's letter to her said Uncle at my house after his reading which he requested this deponent to inform her it was his wish she should live with him and that he never had, had a thought of charging Jemima West (now Jemima Adams) or Sarah West then Sarah Peyton for their board and desired this deponent to make this known to his Niece Jemima West and to do all he could to prevail on her to return to his family again to reside and at the same time said West called on this deponents Father (who was present) to take notice that he never did or ever would ask or except of any thing for the board of his Nieces aforesaid stating that such money as that should ever come to his Estate for that his deceased Brother Hugh West and himself never kept two purses. Question Ist by Henry Gunnell. Did you not see the Book of accounts that George West the Executor of H. West deceased kept against his two Nieces afore- said and which was produced by Colo.
