One legend is that the name is a variation of Daci, a tribe that lived in Macedonia at the time of the Greek and Roman empires.Breaking with the Greek Orthodox church, a band of Daci migrated west into the area of Alsace-Lorraine, which is a border province with Germany, and indeed, has been under German control just about as often/much as it has under French control. From France, the Dacus family migrated to England, staying only a short period, then on to America in the late 1600s.

Another legend is that the name is a derivation of Danicus, meaning Dane, and traces to the Danish settlers of early England.

Take your pick.
