Good question, Gale. Here's my own idea: Those of use working the John DACUS line have the name Dacus solidly attached to every generation back to William Dacus, cir 1650. During this time, deviations to the spelling have appeared in census, legal, or other documents but the ROOT SPELLING...DACUS...always came to the top. In my database of about 400 Dacus names, I do not have any deviation in the spelling, even though I know once in a while someone recorded the name differently. More important...I have no family line that has taken the name for the entire line. In other words, there is a family Dykus or DICUS or some other variation, and they may even be kin to DACUS, but I have no record of them or where they split off from the Dacus tree. I think it is safe to assume that the family of John W.Dacus, Sr. (b. 1720) and all his descendants have held to the Dacus spelling In other words, I think you'll have to look for a split before 1720!
