Re: Dabney/Puckett
Thomas Puckett 6/12/07
I am interestedin the descendants of Dabney Puckett and his two wives, Nancy Braziel and Margaret Houston, but particularly in the Wiers as I’m a Wier descendant.
A number of surnames in this list of Puckettsalso married into the Wiers or their relatives , such as Kilpatrick, Hopper, Winn, McCafferty, Taylor, Longmire, Horton, Winn, and others.
The Wiers came to Pickens Co., Alabama, from the Long Cane area of Abbeville Dist., S.C., where the Pucketts and Houstons lived. Some one said Margaret Houston was the daughter of James Houston and Alice Armstrong. Some one else said this James Houston was really named John Houston and his wife Alice also called Else Armstrong. Those Houstons of Abbeville Dist. are confusing to most of us apparently.
John A. Horton,1852 – 1882, who married Mary Mentora Puckett, was the son ofJohn D. Horton,a 3rd cousin of Sarah Louisa Horton who married James Stewart Wier, son of Thomas Hamilton Wier who was a 1st cousin of Gen. Andrew Wier and David Stuart Wier who married Pucketts.
William Kilpatrick who married Nancy Puckettwas a relative of Lewis Felto Kilpatrick who married Emma Wier, daughter of James Stewart Wier and Louisa Horton Wier.
Mary Puckett was the first wife of Gen. Andrew Wier and predeceased him.I have seen several places that various people have said she married Downs Calhoun as her second husband, which is not possible, while others have said she married Calhoun first and then Wier.I doubtthat’s correct either, since her son Thomas Dabney Wier recorded his Wier half-siblings on his charts and I think he would have included any Calhoun half-sibs if he’d had them. They must have been his first cousins instead.
Greenwood County (SC) Sketches (1970) by Margaret Watson and Harry Legare Watson, p. 179, says, “Downs Calhoun married Lavinia Puckett, daughter of Dabney Puckett,” and I feel this is likely correct. The name Lavinia appears among grandchildren of Dabney Puckett, no doubt named for the aunt Lavinia Puckett Calhoun.Page 177 of this book also shows her sister Martha Puckett married Nathan Calhoun.A description of the sketches in the book says:“Adapted from a series of articles which appeared in the Index journal from Aug. 1940 to Oct. 1950 under the title On Old Roads written by H. L. Watson.”
The case ofWilliam Syles versus Andrew Weir (sic), et al. (Styles v Weir, 26 Miss 187) regards the heirs of Dabney Puckett.I've not seen the original case, to see if all heirs are mentioned, but you can read the caselaw summaries at googlebooks by googling Dabney Puckett and Weir, Dabney Puckett and Wier, and “Styles v. Weir” and "Styles v. Wier."The case is cited at least 20 times as Styles v. Weir, but in4 Miss Digest 589 (1912), table of cases Digested, the case is indexed on p 589 asStyles v. Wier and in Miss Digest (1879)p. 4 which cites26 Miss 189, so the original case probably spelled the name correctly (Wier).
The Wier-Creekmore Genealogy (Oklahoma City, 1941) by Sarah Elizabeth Creekmore Wallace, p. 13, contains family charts compiled by Thomas Dabney Wier, son of David Stuart Wier and Anna E. Puckett, charts provided to Mrs. Wallace by T.D. Wier’s son Thomas Percy Wier of Houston.
Page 13 containsthis chart:

Nel H. Puckett(the book says Nel; is Uel correct? could be a transcription error by Mrs. Wallace)
*Anna W.(sic) Wier married David Stuart Wier, Dec. 8, 1831
From this list it appears the children are by both first wife Nancy Braziel and second wife Margaret Houston and are also not listed in order of birth. It appears from this that Thomas D. Wier was unaware his motherAnna and sister Mary Puckett Wier were half sisters, if they were.
Somewhere I have some correspondence and information from relatives of Nancy Braziel 30 years ago in which the name is spelled Braziel, Brazile, Brazelle, and one or two other ways as well.

This is what I have on the children of Gen. Andrew Wier and first wife Mary Puckett (d. 1847):
Willis K. Wier b. 1838, d8 Mar 1863 in Atlanta, GA., in the Confederate Army, buried at Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta. He was unmarried in 1860 census (merchant clerk),listed as “dead” in the 1866 Wier family history. At the 1857 wedding of cousin Susan Wier, The Last Gathering of the Clan says: “William and Willis, sons of Andrew Wier, very musical, were there.”
John W. Wierb. c1838 (not shown in 1850 census, but shown as an M.D. age 22 in 1860; listed as “dead” in 1866 history), CSA soldier.
William S. Wier b. 1839 (age 21, bookkeeper in 1860 census) Wm S. Wier of Carrollton d Nov 24, 1860 of pneumonia, age 21 yrs, 6 months),listed as dead in 1866 history
James *D. Wier b.1841shown as James D. age 19 in 1860 census and James D. in 1866 family history (but shown as James B. in Texas census later)
Thomas A. Wier b. 1844,listed in 1866 hist.; probably went to Llano Co., Texas.
Twosons of Andrew and Mary Puckett Wier lived in Llano Co., TX in 1900 according to the 1895 history by Jane Wier Latham published in the West Alabamian newspaper in 1900, reprinted in History of Pickens County, 1972, by James F. Clanahan.(1880 Llano Co. census shows James D. Wier family; 1900 Llano Co. census shows James *B. Wier, age 39 & wife Emma J. (Boyle) & family.I didn’t see James’ brother there and could have overlooked him, but it must be James and Thomas who settled there.)
Nancy Cornelia Wier b. 1845 d. 20 July 1846 (1 year, 6 mo, 26 days)
Mary Ellen (called “M.Ellen”by family)b. c1845-46, listed as Ellen age 15 in 1860 census and as “M. Ellen (dead)” in 1866 history; Listed in a family paper as “ b. 1846, d. Oct 1861, age 16.Carrolton cemetery,” but apparently confusing her with cousin L. Ann Wier (Samuel Wier’s daughter).
Children of Gen. Andrew Wier and second wife Artimessa Ferguson (married 1847-50) were:
Robert Wier b.(listed under the "second issue" in the 1866 family history) must be born after 1847 & probably before 1853, not shown in 1850 or 1860 census, probably diedyoung
EvelineWier (Eva b. 1853, married Henry Rodgers of Vienna, MS.),(Eva age 7 on 1860 census; Eveline in 1866 history)
Albert Wier “unmarried” says one list; not on 1860 census

Howard Wier b. 1860 unmarried in 1900 census.Listed in 1860 census and 1866 history.
