John Dabney, father of Sarah who m. Francis Strother, is the son of John Dabney who was b. bef 1645 and d. "as a young man". He is the sister of Elizabeth Dabney who m. William Winston, according to one source. Cornelius and John Dabney settled on the Pamunkey River in New Kent Co., VA. I don't know what relationship they were to one another.

One account did its best to connect them with D'Abinots of France who were fleeing as Huguenots caught in religious crossfire. This has been repeated by just about everyone since then who has researched the family. Another source took strong exception to that and believes they are simply from the British Isles. There were enough of a similar last name there from the time of William the Conqueror or William the Bastard (depending on viewpoint). He thought this was the simplest connection since there were so many & he was looking for horses instead of zebras. Until someone comes up with something more definitive, it has to remain an unknown.

I'll put children of Francis Strother & Sarah Dabney on the Strother Forum.
