I can see the story of always having people mistake the "o" in cursive as an a. I write my name with a capital A to prevent that kind of confusion. Actually, the "a" came first. The a is a Welch pronounciation. The Anglo-Saxon sound is the short o. The migration of Welch Dabbses to Greater England due to job opportunities ended up with the "a" changed to "o" by accident or by a way of being identified as Welch, (a lower life form in early British history due to prejudice against a race of people that were defeated by the Anglo-Saxons but not defeated entirely by taking refuge in the mountains to survive extermination. Just adding my twist based on readings and research. Glenn
