Michael,
I am working on a theory that my ancestor Josiah Dobbs, born NC 1785, could be a son of John Dabbs.
Josiah had 2 sons in TN in 1810 and 1815; then he went to IL. The standard line of thought among Dobbs researchers is that Josiah is the son of some shadowy Josiah who was the son of Fortunatus Dobbs--also a shadowy character. I cannot find ANY tangible evidence of this.
There are however a great many clues pointing towards the Dabbs family in NC/SC. Nathaniel's youngest sons, hardly older than Josiah 1785 went out there about the time I think he did; there are many family names in common; there are patterns of land occupancy and intermarriage with families that come from upcountry SC/southern NC, etc. etc.
I am wondering if you know of any reason why I should discount John as a possible father for Josiah 1785. If you think that connection is possible, can you suggest any ways I might try to verify it?
Kate
PS--do you know what church, or what denomination John and Jane Gaddy Dobbs belonged to?
