I am looking for the family of origin of a Josiah Dobbs/Dabbs, who--according to later census records in IL--was born 1785, in NC. Josiah 1785 and his unknown wife (or wives) had two children in TN: Isaac Blanton Dobbs in 1810, and William B. Dobbs in 1815, before going on to IL. My ancestor Josiah Dobbs, Jr. (for all the IL records say Dobbs) was born in IL in 1827, probably in Hamilton Co. The elder Josiah remarried shortly thereafter, and with that Mary (b. abt. 1806 GA) produced many more children before dying in the 1860s. Many people think that Josiah 1785 was the son of another Josiah Dobbs born abt. 1761 in NC, but I haven't yet found any real solid information and have been poking around elsewhere. I have been looking at the family of Nathaniel Dabbs, who died in Union Co. SC in 1800, because there are several apparent connections to other families who were in the Union Co. SC/Rutherford Co. NC area at the time--the Blantons and the Haneys. However, although Nathaniel had a son Josiah, he seems to have been too old to be my man. I have seen a reference to "The Descendants of Nathaniel Dabbs, Sr., compiled by Alan Ray and Jennifer Kilburn" (in post # 518, Dabbs, Genforum) that gives dob for Nathaniel and his children, but offers no sources for the information. According to this, Josiah, son of Nathaniel, was born in 1776. But where is he? The Anson Co., NC federal census does list a Josiah, but he is 16/over and has 3 females in his household. He can't be Nathaniel's son, IF that son was born in 1776--he would have been only 14 in 1790, and should have been at home. And whoever the man is in the census, he is surely not my Josiah born 1785, nor yet his father, because in 1790 he has no sons. In 1800, there is a Josiah Dabs in Union Co. SC, who is probably the same man who was in Anson in 1790, and we can date him a little more closely. (Dabbses left in Anson are John, William and Nathaniel Jr.) He is between 26-45, so he was born between 1755 and 1770. Who is this man? If he is Nathaniel's son, then that 1776 birthdate is off by at least 6 years. The other Dabbses in Anson Co. NC 1790 besides the Josiah above are: Nathaniel: 2 males 16/over; 3 males 15/under; 3 females. That's 4 of the sons, both daughters and the wife. Nathaniel, Jr.: 1 male 16/over; 1 female. William: 1 male 16/over. Richard: 1 male 16/over; 1 female. John: 1 male 16/over; 2 males 15/under; 2 females. If the Josiah in the 1790 census is NOT Nathaniel's son, then someone is missing in action. Nathaniel had 11 boys, and if Josiah IS one, then they are all accounted for. Does anyone have any reliable, documented dates for the births of Nathaniel's children? The only possible son of Nathaniel I could be looking at as a possible father of Josiah 1785 is John. In 1800, John is still in Anson, and he does have one son 10-16. Does anyone know who that was? Does anyone have any suggestions of other families I should look in? Does anyone know of another Josiah Dabbs/Dobbs born NC abt 1761 and to what family he may have belonged? Thanks, Kate
