My husband was newspaper archive surfing this past week-end on the name Dabbs. He printed out articles for me and I am trying to post the information in the hopes that it will help someone find their lost link. The Southwestern Christian Advocate, New Orleans, LA seems to have published letters in the 1880s from freed slaves looking for people who they lost contact with when they were sold and separated from family years earlier. I am sure if someone would search this archived newspaper listing names other than the Dabbs more info could be gained for your research into where family members went. At least I hope so. I don't know if anyone else has come across this tool, but I wanted to post it here in hopes of someone breaking their 'brick wall.' Here is the article: August 15, 1889 pg 2, Issue 33 Col D Column - "Lost Friends" (I separated the letter by paragraphs for easier reading and I quote) Mr. Editor, "I wish to inquire through your valuable paper for the whereabouts of my two brothers, Washington and Andrew Dabbs. They and I are natives of Washington Tenn. In antebellum days Brother Washington was sold to one Joseph Dabbs, whose name he thereafter bore (having borne the name of Stephens prior thereto) and Brother Andrew went with the soldiers after said sale. Mother's name was Nancy Williams (or better known as Stephens) who since died in the full triumph of faith. She belonged to Edward Stephens, the Methodist preacher of Coer's Creek, Tenn. I was at Edward Stephens when Joseph Dabbs bought Brother and took him to his house on the Murfreesboro Pipe (my note: it should say Pike), after which I left Tennessee with one I. F. Davis, and came directly to Louisiana. I have not heard from any of them since I left the State. (my note: left Tennessee) Any information of their whereabouts will be thankfully received by, Yours respectfully, Ed Williams. Rosedale P.O., Iberville Parish, La., care Slack Bros."
