Shirley, I have a feeling that this wasn't pretty. Edwin Dabbs was the son of George Dabbs (the brother of Rev. Richard Dabbs Jr.) Just how (or whether) he was related to Joseph W. Dabbs the Abolitionist in unclear. Joseph was declared as dead without a will in Tennessee, even though he had a will in Illinois. Hardeman Co. court minutes read as follows: > Hardeman County Court, December term A.D. 1846 > > It appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that > Joseph Dabbs is dead and hath made no will, and that > there are debts due and owing to his estate in this > county, and Edwin Dabbs having prayed > the court that he be admitted to Adms. on said Estate > which was granted and thereupon said Dabbs came into > court and Entered into bond in the sum of three thousand > dollars with Abner D. Lewis and Alvin Wamnus(?) his > security which bond was duly acknowledged in open court > and approved and orderd to be filed once said Dabbs > was sworn as the Law directs with Received letters of > Adm. There are no page numbers in the court book by this entry. It seems to me that Joseph's estate was probably dissolved in TN, and that none of it got back to the Abolitionist's black family. By the way, you will note the name Abner D. Lewis. This was Edwin's brother-in-law. He and Edwin's wife, Elizabeth Lewis, were the children of Corbin Lewis and Nancy Dabbs. Nancy was, in turn, the daughter of William Dabbs the Surveyor, of Charlotte Co. VA, and his first wife, Elizabeth Hatchett (he later married Sarah Claybrook). Abner D. Lewis was likely named for Nancy's brother, Abner Dabbs. I read that you said that Joseph signed his Illinois will with just an X mark. Do you happen to have any records with his signature? I would like to compare this to the signature of the Richard Dabbs who lived in Hardeman Co. at the same time. I am trying to determine whether they were separate individuals or the same.
