Prior to the the Treaty of the Trianon (1920),Hungary controlled all of Transylvania. That had been the case for 1000 years. Romania changed sides in WWI (1915) and was awarded Transylvania for it's efforts in 1920. Late in the 1800's Hungary passed a language law that demanded all names on official documents be spelled according to Hungarian phonetics. Lazarucz (lazaruts)is such spelling. The name could be spelled other ways depending on the language spoken by the person named. Horgas (horgash) Venig has only one spelling and one pronounciation. Transylvania is/was a large territory and contained many ethnic groups. Principally, Romanians, Hungarians (many still live there today), Banater Germans and Gypsies. The Germans were banished at the end of WWII. So you can't assume everybody in Romania is an ethnic Romanian. In the old days they were Hungaian citizens and today they are Romanian citizens but everybody there knows what ethnic group their ancests belonged to. And many don't speak Romanian as a mother tongue. Notify Administrator about this message?
