To make your search fruitful there are certain things you should establish.
1. You should know how the famuly spelled their name when they got off the boat because that's how it was spelled in the old country.
2.You should know the exact ethniicity of the folks in question. A term like "Czech." might mean "Czechoslovakia".
That country had Czechs, Moravians, Slovaks, Ruthenians, Jews, Gypsies, and, at least, two distict groups of ethnic Germans.
3. If you are uncertain about ethnicity knowing their mother tongue would do as well.
4. If you know where these folks come from EXACTLY you are home free. An EXACT location answers a lot of the previous questions and you have the one and only thing that will allow you to get old country records of this family.
