Hello Laura, You can’t get original records over the Internet (not yet, anyway). In the early 1950s all parish registers in the former Czechoslovakia were moved to state regional archives, so writing or visiting a church where the vital event took place is a waste of time because the parish registers are no longer at there and the churches will rarely reply to genealogical inquires. Generally, vital records dating prior to 1900 are kept at the regional archives and are open to the public (anyone can access them). Post-1900 records are kept at so-called Matricni urad (Office of Vital Records) at various locations through the country and are accessible only to direct descendents. However, this is only a rough guidance – there may be parish registers dating from the 1850s, for example, kept at the vital records office because they were still used in the 1920s or even 1940s and may therefore contain records of individuals still alive today. Pravikov belonged to the parish of Kamenice nad Lipou and the parish registers, which date back to about 1790, are housed at the State Regional Archives in Trebon, a city about 25 miles southwest of Kamenice nad Lipou. The problem with accessing vital records at the Trebon Archives is that you have to reserve a place in the research room at least 2 months ahead. What’s even worse it that they’re fully booked until the end of June 2008 and anyone wanting to do research has to rely on cancellations. The Archives will start accepting new bookings for the period July - December at the end of June. My sister, who does genealogy research at the Trebon Archives, told me that she has to call the archives as soon as they start taking reservations because all the places (there are fewer than 10, if I recall correctly) are fully booked for the next six months within a couple of hours. I don’t think you should count on doing any research there during your visit. Regards, Joseph Rek Notify Administrator about this message?
