Kurt, today's Austria is made up of nine states or provinces. One of these is Lower Austria (in German: Niederösterreich), located in the northeastern part of today's Austria. Until 1986, its capital was Vienna, which is also of course Austria's national capital. In 1986, Lower Austria's provincial capital was transferred from Vienna to the city of Sankt Pölten, or if written without the "Umlaut" (two dots) over the "o", Sankt Poelten, which is about 60 km, or 40 miles, west of Vienna.
