Maternal Family Record
Of
Anna (Guentner / Guntner ) Gallagher
and
Her Cousin Maria (Reiss) Bauer

This letter was gave to me in the late 1980's by Great Uncle Neal Gallagher in California now Deceased. He got this letter from Family in California. He sent out copies of this letter to the Family all over the United States. He also sent us Family Group Sheets for all the family members mentioned in this letter. I have most of his letters going back to 1987. After Great Uncle Neal Gallagher passed away, I was also gave some of the Gallagher photo's by his wife Great Aunt Bess Gallagher. Also through the message boards I have located a second cousin on the Guentner line in Pittsburgh. She has been helping me alot with that side of the Family. She has also been sharing family photo's with us.

I just thought you all would like to see the work that our Great Aunt did to collect some of the Family History. This is still a on going family search for the surnames of Guentner/Guntner, Puchtler, and Gallagher .

We are looking right now for Our ( Ignatz Guentner/Guntner ) in Pa. without much luck. We are trying to locate him on the ship he came to the United States on. His will was located in Pittburgh by our second cousin.

There are or were maybe two Ignatz Guentner's / Gentner's in Pa.

The original typed letter I have is now turning yellow and the paper tears easily from age. As are the family group sheets. I figured I better make another copy and post it for others to enjoy, as I do.

Thanks,
Ann Gallagher

The Family Puchtler belongs to the few Families of the Village of Petlarn, who owned the farm P8, (Old number was P32 until 1805), and whose family still owns it today. This family can look back to a 300 residence (ownership).

In the taxroll of the year 1654, which was the first year after the 30 Years War (1618 -1638) that taxrolls were restarted, appears Thomas Puchtler, listed in the catagory with all the farmers of the village, with site 18 as the property description - for tax purposes - as in other villages and hamlets always too low.

Under the 27 owners which are listed in the "Pastureland Register of 1555," no familiar names appear except for Sommss Gunter who is the forebearer of the many Guntners today. All others are strange names from an earlier time. Also in the "Ownerlist of 1587, which already includes the familiar names Kraus, Schmidt, Herold, Bauer, and Schwand, along with Three Gintners, the name Puchtler is not mentioned. Probably Thomas - or even his father earlier - settled here, after the destruction of the Great War, which raged here the worst, right in the beginning. It is unknown from where he came. A "Godfather" Puchtler is a farmer in the 1587 list of Hinterkoffen, otherwise the name does not appear amoung the Tachauer District subjects, just as it does not appear for any homeowner of the Tachauer - Pfraumberger Judicial District (Address book 1925).

At almost the same time the taxroll was started, since 1654, the Matrika* began for Petlarn in the Purschau Parish Office in 1657. And in Tachau the Land Register was started in 1652. Of course for the study of local history and Geneology, these important documents were only kept imperfectly in the beginning, but the uniqueness of the name Puchtler leaves this imperfection less noticeable.

* The Matrikan may be linked to our Vital Statistics records (Birth, Marriage, and Death) both in content and the haphazard way they were kept in the beginning.

In the oldest land register purchase number 7 states:

"Ano 1661 - January 15: In December (xber) Georg Puchtler buys that whole estate of his kin Thomas Puchtler for 144 Schork meise. Then, on Candlemass 1662, 50 schork meise, then each year, due candlemass, 15 schork m."

"Also in the first land register:

"Ano 1697 - November (bris) 9: Lorentz Puchtler buys from his mother, Margarethe Puchtlerin, that whole estate which lies between Blasius Guntner and Bartl Kurz with all appertainences... for about 70 schork meise."

In the second land register the above purchase of the year 1697 is again mentioned.
(Purchase # 20) " As of St. Martinmass, 1702, he, the buyer, is freed of all obligations, completely without the least payment or sale."

Then follows:

(Purchase # 21 "Lorenz Puchtler sells his dear son, Hans Puchtler, his whole property lying between Hans Kurtz and Georg Gunter for 100 Gulden. The seller retains his lodging, with fuel and light, and an alotment of three strich corn (Wheat) etc. per year." Dated 1 June 1737, Bureau of Tachau.

This new owner votes with the majority of farmers of Petlarn at the Robotaus election of St. Galli Days, 16 October 1776, To accept the newly acquired Robot debts.

In the year 1783 he sells his estate to his son Christoph Puchtler, whose Baptismal name "Toffl" is retained as the name of the estate " At Toffl" to the present time.

Christoph's son, Johann Georg Puchtler, appears as the owner in the "Staileu Kataster" (Austrian Dialect) Land Register, where the estate was divided into parsels. Three of his children became land owners: *Anton, who marries into "Neubauerhof", P 28 ., Johann Michel first buys on ( ) the property P 33, sells it and builds on his purchased lands the "Tofflkulling" during the development of the Kullingflur in the 60s. In the years 1865 - 66 the "Kulling haus" # 65 is built near the school. In the year ( ), he had erected the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, where, during the Johannas Oktav ( the 8 day celeration of St. John ) evening prayers are held. Lastly the youngest son, Johann Georg, inherits the family farm.

Barbara Puchtler, the second child of Anton and Margareta, marries Ignatz Guntner on 11 February 1879, and immigrates to the United States in 1882. Their descendants continue today in the Many Guntners of Pennsylavania, the midwest and California.

The youngest child Margareta, marries on 24 February 1873, Johann Reiss, the son of Matthias Reiss and Anna Maria Guntner. He is a cobbler in Petlarnbrand # 11 where the first three of his four children are born.

In 1878 the family moves to Vienna, where the youngest child Anna, is born.

Of the four children nothing is known of the middle two, Ignatz or Margareta.

The first child, Maria Reiss, immigrates to America in 1893, where she marries Anton Bauer, the second son of Anton Bauer and Theresia Guntner of Petlarnbrand # 68. He has immigrated to New York City in 1892.

After the birth of the first two of five children, the family moves to Brooklyn where the youngest three children are born, Martha, lives only a short time.

Anton and Maria later move to San Jose, California, following the lead of his brother, Frank. They reside here until their deaths. Elsa Bauers marries on 30 July 1932, Wilelm Kratz, in San Jose.

I will stop here because of the living family members.
