Robert,
First, my apologies...my family uses the Micheal spelling (the less common one...at least I had that part right!).That's what a bunch of Ny-Quil and a serious case of influenza will do to my typing and proof-reading!.Now I feel quite dumb! Thanks for the Michal spelling...that could be useful.
Majba...I've been able to find some, although none that I can ID as related.I have abolutely no information at this point other than the name Julia Majba (and we're not even sure the first name is correct).I do not know at this point whether either family in question came through Ellis Island or another port of entry.I'm guessing they'd have come in the late 1880s time frame (by estimating based on family stories) but I can't narrow it down anymore at this point.I am certain of the Bohemian ancestry, though.I'm trying to track down general immigration information to see if there was a common port used by those coming from Bohemia in that timeframe, although frankly, I'm not really close to needing that information yet.
My information about the name change/old sp is coming from family recollection. My grandfather (the second Micheal Chehval) was first-generation American and spoke Bohemian as his parents didn't speak English. He died 20+ years ago, and all his children remember Chekvala as the spelling.I have no real idea if it's correct or not.Zlatica Beca aslo just posted the Cechvala spelling as well...maybe a place to start.
As far as SS application, I've been working that trail for a while.I still haven't found a SS number for the second Micheal (as I said, he's been gone a long time, and it's been tough for family to track down 20+ year old papers...they're working on it too), much less the first Micheal.SSDI indicates two Chehvals (my grandmother Iva, Michael II's wife, and Frank, his brother).
Thanks for all your help.I really appreciate it.
Nikki
