To Jim Svoboda:
Recently I purchased an immigrant trunk at an antique store in Paducah, Kentucky, with the following painted on the side of it.The lettering is very difficult to read but after several hours of careful study I believe it says:
N I ---homa. Pokorny(Thomas, Nicholas??)
Cleveland, Sta. Ohio
Franz St---onkyNobr.50=14.
Amerika
The trunk is hand dovetailed construction with an arched lid and hand forged handles and hinges. The top of the lock is present, the bottom is missing. The age is presumed to be about 1820 or so and the trunk has two iron bands encircling it. The size is 41 X 21 X 24Naturally I am very curious as who the owner might have been that may have immigrated to the US with all of his earthly belongings in this one trunk.Almost all of the original finish remains with the exception of some worn spots on the lid from being opened over the years.
Any information would be appreciated.
