The first written mention, related to Plzen', is from AD 976 and refers to place known today as Stary (Old) Plzenec. In 1295, the King of Bohemia Va'clav II founded the New Plzen', near by, as a Royal Town. The recorded names of this place are Plzen' (Czech) Pilsen (German) and Plzna (Latin). In the past, the most often used name of Plzen', in English, was Pilsen (from that than: Pilsner - a type of beer, originating there).
