Dale,

I am not stating for the record that the various St-Cyr locales in France were named AFTER/FROM the Deshaies family nickname of Canada. Place names and family "dit" names are two different subjects here. What I am saying is that IN FRANCE: these places may have been named after a certain saint, named Cyr (or even a shortened form of Cyrille), or even after a person of the ST-CYR surname in FRANCE.

In QUEBEC, CANADA, HOWEVER, the ST-CYR surname is a derivative of the more complete family surname: Deshaies dit St-Cyr. At a certain point in the 1800s, some of the family descendants took the surname Desahies as THEIR surname; and the rest took the "dit" name or nickname of ST-CYR as THEIR surname. BOTH surnames exist today in NORTH AMERICA, but the vast majority of these families can trace their origins back to the COMMON SOURCE of the first Deshaies dit St-Cyr ancestors. That's all I meant to say. Sorry, it wasn't clear enough! Hope this is more understandable!

And the ST-CYRS of North America are NOT RELATED to the Acadian CYR Family!!!... UNLESS a descendant from each family above married in the Nicolet region of Quebec Province, where these surnames can be found in abundance, living side-by-side; or down here in the USA. That then, would provide the ONLY connection between the two families, by marriage. As for this happening, I have NOT done any research to confirm any alliance between the two families/surnames by a marriage among any of their descendants.

Just exactly where the St-Cyr nickname for the Deshaies family came from, right now, I haven't a clue. This would also have to be researched, and personally, I realy don't have the time or interest to pursue it. Perhaps someone else can enlighten us all on what seems to be a persistent question on this forum. Dennis
