Hi Harriet
I'm from Trinidad so I'm familiar with the name
A.S. Mavrogordato. His picture appeared in the Trinidad Guardian newspaper a few times, probably during or just after WWII. I remember him as being serious, middle-aged to elderly and mustachioed. Í wasn't aware of any negative reference so I assumed he wasn't one of the bad guys. This is significant because in the heyday of the colonial era there were more than enough bad white guys (read racist or quasi-racist)to go around. A logical source for you to seek out would be said Trinidad Guardian archives. Good luck!
P.S. In case you're wondering why this post suddenly appeared, it's simply because the unusual name suddenly popped into my head as one of my unsolved "mysteries" from a pretty mystifying culture.
