My father told me an interesting story. His name is Antonis Christophi Mouna/Mounas. When I asked the Greek Orthodox minister what this meant, and no not the dirty deviation of the word. He asked me if it had started as Moun, Old French for Monk. My father and his brother had been told that an A had been added to signify naming from the female side of the family and an AS was tacked on for the male side or vice versa. Which to me makes sense as my father's christian name came from his grandmothers surname. His brother however was named from his father. Very complicated stuff!
Just a tidbit of interest for you.
